Everybody, in particular if donor, knows how important is to donate blood, but our dog can do the difference and become a donor. The blood in veterinary is as important as in human field; transfusions following accidents or surgical operations, for animals suffering from anaemia or coagulation disorders are now common and transfusion has become a well established practice, especially for dogs.
is essential to know the group before a transfusion.
Canine blood types are classified following a system that refers to the different antigens present on the surface of the red cells. The principal Erythrocyte Antigen (DEA) are 1.1, 1.2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
In order to donate, a dog must be healthy, be up to date with all vaccinations, must be aged between 2 and 8, a weigh of 25kg or more, and must never has been transfused. To know if your dog is suitable to be a donor, it’s necessary a withdraw per year. It is possible to collect 10 ml of blood per kg, for the donation, instead, it is possible to collect till 300 ml of blood.
There are many Dog Blood Banks in the world. Now Italy has one too, the DbD - Dog blood Donors thanks to Almo Nature’s foundation “Almore Fund”, with the sponsorship of the National Association of Italian Veterinary Doctors (ANMVI) and of the National Federation Italian Veterinary Order (FNOVI). The DbD is a database for veterinary that subscribed the project, to help them in their work and everytime they need to search for a donor.
To become a donor, the owner have to subscribe the form on the found page, obtaining an identification code, then has to bring the dog to one of the certified structures, or to his own vet that can register himself to the project.
The veterinary has to collect to estabilish the blood type, if the dog will be suitable it will be registred in the DbD as donor, on the contrary just as a recipient.
In case of success and the dog is accepted as donator, one of the vet registred to the DbD can call you in case of necessity, and ask your help to save a life. You are not bound, anyway join to the DbD program, can be an opportunity to know about the state of health of your dog, in fact all the costs for the necessary blood test are on Almore Found. The donation is an opportunity for everyone, for Vet and for the owners but first for all animals needing of a concrete Help.
